French Bulldog Growth Stages

Puppies double their birth weight. Eyes and ears still closed.

Transitional (2–4 weeks)

Eyes open, begin walking. Weight gain is rapid.

Socialization (4–12 weeks)

Fastest growth period. Gaining 1–2 lbs per week.

Juvenile (3–6 months)

Growth slows slightly. Reaching 50–65% of adult weight.

Adolescent (6–9 months)

Approaching 80–90% of adult size. Filling out.

Adult (10–14 months)

Growth plates close. Final weight achieved.

When to Worry About Weight

  • Puppy hasn't gained weight in 2+ weeks during growth phase
  • Weight is more than 20% below breed standard for age
  • Rapid unexpected weight gain (could indicate overfeeding or fluid retention)
  • Visible ribs with no muscle mass (different from normal puppy leanness)
  • Lethargy combined with poor appetite and weight loss

Always consult your veterinarian if you have concerns about your puppy's growth rate.
